Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 15:10 Hello future

Isn't is strange yet natural how things keep changing? I was just looking at the layout of my old livejournal website. It's filled with memories and snippets of history. When I dig deeper, I read things I don't even really remember anymore. I guess it shows how selective memory is.

Just wanted to let you know I'm still reading, watching, illustrating :)

I'm still here!

Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 21:59 YAY!

Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 23:57 Alice the elephant

After getting an e-mail from someone looking into the "roots" of my family (Zschusschen or Zschuschen), I restarted some of my own genealogical research. I've found some interesting stories and accounts of the lives of my ancestors (one of them seems to have fought in the Battle of Waterloo) But none of that is important, because I also stumbled on a (comparatively more recent) article in the Surinam newspaper 'Guiana'. This newspaper was published and printed in 1888 by J.A Zschuschen and contained one of the following articles in the foreign news section:

"Barnum's elephant Alice, who died in the flames in the menagerie at Bridgeport Connecticut, has been dissected. In his stomach were found: 300 penny's, a piece of a penknife, four parasol rings and part of a led tube."

Poor Alice, first she had been used to be the grieving widow of the famous Jumbo (forced to travel with his bones and hide) and then she died in a fire - only to be dissected and her meagre fortune taken :(

Is it bad that I already planned (and half-paid) my vacation for next year in may? This is really (really!) my final college year. The end date will probably be between February and March. I can't believe that after all this time I can finally see the end of the road. I'll be graduating :) Okay, so I'm not there yet. But yay!

Read on for S-Korean drama talk... (tv drama, not the other 'drama'!Collapse )

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 22:40 Upcoming movie watch list

Summer vacation is over and I've seen a lot of good and bad movies, but this is a small grab of the autumn and winter movies I'm currently looking forward to:

Never let me go

Never let me go Movie

Based on a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, this is a dystopian film set in Britain. It portrays a sort of coming of age story as told by Kathy (played by Carey Mulligan). It focuses on the lives of 3 young people who find out they live in a terrible reality.

I can't say much without completely spoiling the plot but I'm still planning to read the book. I do have quite a preference for dystopian novels! So I'm looking forward to it.

The original novel cover:
Never let me go book

European release Date: Winter 2010 (January)

Trailer under the cut and all the other movies on my watch listCollapse )

Any movies you're looking forward to? Please share :D

Friday, August 20, 2010 at 03:23 Start of the end

Of my study that is :) Summer vacation is almost over and I hope to start my "freelance-based 5 month end assignment" soon. I've managed to get 2 clients, one of which has an extensive project to get involved in. Best of all, it involves a lot of illustrating :D

And I forgot to spam my journal with my portfolio:

It's a simple thing, really. But I keep it up to date as much as possible :D

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 01:30 End of an era?

I used to have this old fashioned blog on It's where I started my first blog back in 2001 and I've kept on using it ever since. Pitas was a very basic blogging tool, it didn't offer any extras. It had no comment system, no communities, no ads. Though pretty stagnant, it was also quite reliable. Until now, because the blogging host has vanished over night.

I think I'll miss it a bit. I've double posted all my entries to LJ since 2003, so at least I haven't lost all my entries. Let this be a lesson 'to back up my life' (then again pitas didn't really have a back up tool either ;).

I bought a paid account for a little while so I could transfer my latest shiney (new-isch) blog layout to Livejournal. Still using the old S1 coding though :) Now I feel more at home at LJ.

The Triffids are coming...

Day of the Triffids Clip: "Skies Ablaze"

I loved 'Day of the Triffids' as a book, and I also watched the 80-ties version of the BBC adaption. But this new version looks pretty stunning so far. Nice visual effects. I hope they do as well with the characters and mood. The mood is especially important. The 'Day of the Triffids' is scary because it makes everyone helpless against something that is considered harmless and common.

It'll be on BBC1 at 22:00 (gmt+1) coming monday

Friday, December 25, 2009 at 01:56 Merry...

I have been busy drawing a lot of stuff, but it's all towards a certain goal and I can't really show it until it's done. I also have a big presentation the tuesday after christmas vacation. A presentation I still have to put together. So I kept it simple this year :)

Hope you all have a good holiday, whether with friends or family or alone. Make the most of it.

Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 20:55 Start of college doesn't mean the end of the world! Or does it?

My dad (who is currently snoring on the couch) is visiting this week and he's been cooking some really nice Surinam food. Fattening me up some more until college starts officially Monday.

Meanwhile, my study has relocated itself to a new building. Apart from a glance from the outside, I haven't seen the building yet, so I have no idea where to be once I find out where the entrance is. I'd really love it if all buildings had this one HUGE blinking sign saying Entrance. Entering a building from the wrong side, or not being able to enter it at all (causing me to circle like a vulture on a bicycle) is one thing I seem to excel at at least ;)

Sunday, July 5, 2009 at 22:02

It has been a very hot and humid week, with the weather practically itching for a thunderstorm. Cue last friday. I love a good thunderstorm! That is, when I'm safe and sound inside and not on an open field or on a little ship at sea ;) The wind turned the blue sky into a roiling cloud field, It looked amazing and then it started to rain, a lot.

But not before I could take pictures!

This is my favourite, it looks like some kind of wormhole is opening! Here's another one. Only resized them, no editing. The lousy Iphone camera is good for something at least I suppose ;)

Just as I'm writing this, the wind turns and there's a rumbling sound. Oh dear ;)

Monday, June 15, 2009 at 03:14 crochet

Did some quick and dirty work with my layout, I only changed the images. (Can't pay LJ for a real change, since I'm extremely broke) I somehow felt the need for a more cleaner look. Pictures are of my attempts at crochet, not very good at it, but I managed to make my own phone pouch, so yay me!

Don't think it will hold up as long as my old layout, and I still need to add some more info about me. I'm also working on the relaunch of my portfolio (there is that unfortunate need to be more professional about it) so I got a pile of stuff to do!

Sleep, now, sleep is good.

Oh and for the twittering people feel free to follow me, I don't spam (most of the time) ;)

Monday, May 25, 2009 at 16:59 Done! Over! Finito!

I quit Abunai 2 weeks ago. I've illustrated for them for almost 7 years now(actually longer but the Abunai convention itself didn't exist back then ;). There was fun, frustration, laughs and deadlines. I've learned a lot. But I have to move on. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the extra time. Maybe start my own comic?

Whatever I do, I have to keep drawing. There is still so much to learn!

Thursday, December 25, 2008 at 00:11 Christmas Spirit

Just kidding! Merry Christmas to all! :)

Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 19:46 It is a gift...

I didn't have the UFO radio interview, but I had a valid reason since I was at the cinema. Truly a valid reason! So sorry that I didn't enlighten the world with my view of the truth out there ;)

The Dutch holiday called Sinterklaas was yesterday, but I got a present today from An which was the Hancock dvd and included the cap. Of course this requires a photo as proof! I'm still wearing it, it is pretty cozy and it goes well with my scarf. I also gave myself a gift recently in the form of a new drawing tablet, financed by a money-return from the government. It's money well spend, even though it was a lot of money to spend! I now have the pleasure of owning a Wacom Intuos3 A5 widescreen. It's so shiny! I spend the last 2 days drawing my first picture on it, poppies are great flowers to draw. I'm pretty satisfied with the drawing :D. The sensitivity and smoothness of the tablet and pen are awesome. I don't think I could ever go back to work on my ancient less-then-A6 Graphire :)

Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 12:22 Unidentified flying objects

Okay, so I was out late one night, the sky was clear. I'm a big fan of stars, I like to spot satellites, I know what airplanes look like, I enjoy watching the occasional lasershow and I've seen weatherbaloons. But what was this?! It moved really fast and it seemed really close.

Okay, so me being the nerd that I am I reported my uh..sighting on a UFO website. Now, a few weeks later I get a mail saying they want to contact me for a radio show, they want to talk to me by phone. If there are any aliens out there, please come and take me away because I'll be too embarrassed to talk on a show!

"Are you making strange sounds?"
"Are you listening to strange sounds?"
"I thought I heard the cats mewling outside"

"I'm listening to Kate Bush actually.."

Bwhahahaha haha!

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at 23:21 Conventions and laundry

Abunai is pretty close and I'm working away on the t-shirt design. Drawing something in illustrator can be a challenge, especially when you're stuck with only one color (white on dark t-shirt). It's pretty tricky to get it to look right. I can't show the result untill after the convention. But I can show you the poster I finished much earlier :). Many many (nearly) sleepless nights were spend on finishing it.

When I start drawing I turn into a total slob. Plates and cups were stacked for miles on my desk, week old laundry tried to start a revolution by assaulting my bed. Dustclouds resembled thumbleweed in size and movement. If I had the time and the uh.. stamina I probably would have added more detail, but working on a A6 sized tablet for an A3 sized poster, it isn't very friendly for my hands. Unfortunately there was no time to do a proof(print) of the poster and the printed version turned out with a significant lack of contrast. I was pretty disappointed :( Nothing to be done about it now. It does work pretty well as a wallpaper though ;). If you want you can try to name the legendary creatures that you see.

Drawing-mode is over for today, time to do the laundry before it stages a coup!

Friday, July 25, 2008 at 23:10 I deserve shoes!

I'm not usually into shoes, I usually go for comfortable versus looks, but this is beautiful torture for only 29 euro's ;)! Must show the girly superficial me to the world!

Strike a pose! Skirts! Summer! Here I come! I so badly want to go on vacation. I desperately long for beaches and clear water.
